There's No Place Like Home

Yeah.  Right.  I guess that feeling only applies if your vacation sucked.  Mine didn’t.  Eh, so the original flight down to Orlando was canceled, but they did get us on a later flight, so we only missed 6 hours of fun in the sun.  We got over it the minute we pulled off our coats flying over Georgia.

I have never vacationed with friends before.  It was fun.  No horror stories on this end, of course our friends may have a different view.   I’m guessing they enjoyed themselves too.  They did tell the story of bringing their kids to Orlando with other friends who supplied the time share condo and the bratty, spoiled, only-child.  This time they supplied the time share and there were no kids.  We did try to make them feel at home by yelling things from the back seat of the car like, “he’s looking at me” or  “are we there yet?”  They just yelled back, “don’t make me stop this car.”  Adults only vacation.   Too bad everyone else in Orlando brought their kids.

The condo was great.  It was close to everything and had everything.  It even had a screened back porch overlooking the pool and Jacuzzi, an outdoor pool table, a gazebo with grills, and our own pet squirrel.  If that wasn’t enough, there was also a computer room, workout room, and laundry room.  The only thing we didn’t use was the laundry room.  (Snort) Like princess catty would have known a washer from a dryer.  OK, that sentence should read, THEY didn't use the laundry room.

We had no set itinerary so we all threw something we wanted to do into the idea soup bowl.  Then we looked at the weather and decided which days would be most appropriate for each activity.  If we didn’t get to something, we were OK with that.  No rushing.  I should point out here that I suspect the Weather Channel imports their weather people from PA.  Apparently, 50% chance of rain really means about 60 drops.  Overcast means partly sunny.  It was beautiful all week.  High seventies and low eighties.

I have to finish loading the vacation pictures which is really hard to do since I have limited time on the computer.  I need a kindergarten refresher.  I don’t like sharing.  The Teen gets all the time on the good computer.  I only get an hour and a half.  It’s not fair and I don’t like it.  I even got desperate enough to drag out my old CPU.   It was either the old computer or quit my job.  Quitting my job for extra computer time seemed a bit drastic. The antique is running Windows 98 and needs a good cleaning and some anti virus and spyware updating but it gets me to my e-mail and everyone’s blogs.  I just need the good computer to fiddle with the pictures.  So everyone will get the juicy details with pictures in a couple of days.

So am I glad to be home???  Welllll . . . .maybe if I wouldn’t have been greeted with an IRS survey.   OH, and a questionnaire for jury duty (federal court).  Can you imagine that?  The deaf girl does jury duty.  “He killed her with a nun????  That’s really sick.  Oh, OK, he killed her with a gun.  I get it now.”  Then I woke up Sunday morning to an inch of cold white snow.  Then Monday morning I had to be to work at 4am only to find the eighteen phone messages I erased from my home phone the day before didn’t include one heads up about having to do inventory outside in the cold.

Maybe I’m having a nightmare.  Maybe I’ll wake up and see sun and palm trees out my window.  Maybe someday I’ll hit the lotto and not have to worry about ending vacations.  Hell, I don’t even play the lottery.  Who am I kidding?  This fairy princess needs a reality check.  I’m going to go clean the bathroom.

The basic system of you and your friends sounds very similar to the way I travelled with college friends for 4 weeks a year out of college. We threw ideas out, we put things together as best we could, and all ended up satisfied with whatever we did do. It's good to live that way rather than spending your vacation worrying about what you're going to do, fighting over what you're going to do. Life's too short, to say nothing of vacation being too short!

I'm glad you're back. I was a bit worried since you haven't posted in a while. The vacation sounds like a real success. Glad you had fun. As for the IRS questionnaire and the jury duty - the little devil on my shoulder is jumping up and down and hissing, "throw them away"....tee hee. Welcome home.

Sounds like a great vacation. I like coming home, but I prefer to still have a few days to ramp back into reality.

Since I've had kids I've noticed that I tend to reach the end of a vacation worn out and ready to come home for a break. With just a few adult friends (if you pick the right friends) there tends to be less hassle and less organisation needed. I'm glad you had a good break, even if you did get a less-than-perfect homecoming.

Glad you enjoyed your vacation. I was in Orlando two summers ago. Although they say it's bigger than New York, it doesn't really convey the energy and excitement New York has. Probably have to go to Miami to get that. We stayed in a great condo for the week. The company was great, but Orlando didn't impress me.

JS and BlackPhi, friends are by far the best traveling companions. Capt., I didn't really care for Orlando and the surrounding "communities". The traffic was constant. The whole place was incredibly congested. And you are right, it's not exciting like New York. Paula and RHG, I like a bit of time to get back into the routine. I sent the jury questionaire back with a copy of my hearing evaluation. I have no problem doing jury duty but they have to know I have limitations. As for that IRS questionaire, it was supposed to be anonymous, so I told them to knock off the form numbers since they don't make sense to anyone except an IRS agent. I also told them simplified English would be a nice touch. Then Monday I got a postcard from the IRS asking if I'd sent the questionaire back yet. I'm thinking it may not be completely anonymous.

With temperatures in the 70's & 80's, I can understand why you wanted to stay longer!
