It's Raining Almond Joy

posted Wednesday, 24 May 2006

It's been so cold and rainy the last week.  Even though the sun was shining, yesterday at the garden center the owner was commenting that she didn't remember the last time all her customers were in their winter coats shopping for flowers the week before Memorial Day.  It was almost sureal wearing my winter coat while picking out all the things I thought would make our little yard look cheerful and springy.  I've been saving up.  I picked things that I've been longing for over the years and sprinkled in some things I know do well.  Four boxes later, I hauled  home my Black Eyed Susans, Artemisia, Lantana, Impatiens, and Dusty Miller.

Yesterday and today I turned dirt, filled hanging pots, and planted some of the beds along the garage and the walkway next to the house.  I'll have to make another trip to fill whats left of the yard.  Then there are all the individual pots that adorn the steps and various corners of the patio that have yet to be filled.  Honey was picking off the dead leaves from his tomato plants that the frost turned to mush  the night before.  I hope they make it.  These are Italian tomatoes a friend gave to us.  Honey wants to fill the rest of the vegetable plots with tomatoes and peppers he has had success with over the years.  There is something so peaceful about working in the dirt and seeing all the little life forms moving around there.  Or maybe it's because I'm working without my "ears" on.  Either way, it's very satisfying.

One of the pluses of working an unconventional schedule is that I can spend some "me time" in the garden.  Another is planning lunch with Honey.  He works so close that lunch at home is a nice distraction from the work day.  We share a sandwich and salad.  We catch up on what's happening at work.  Honey hangs the clothes on the line outside.  He inspects my handiwork in the garden.  While I sit  in the sun at our patio table, he goes in to refill his glass.  KLUNK!  That's the sound of Almond Joy raining down onto my head.  Snack size.  No permanent damage.  Honey must have tossed it out the back door.  Lucky shot hitting me in the head like that.  He couldn't do it on purpose if he tried.  Besides, he's too sweet, almost as sweet as this Almond Joy.

Thank you for your vibes. My second wife was a fern lady and when she left of course she left her plants. Within three weeks all the plants had died and the only place I could grow anything was in my fridge. ha ha JWL

Oh, I miss the days when Lovey and I met for lunch *sigh*.

I agree about gardening. It's sooooo satisfying and restorative. I'll be posting photos of my flowers this summer. Enjoy the dirt.
