For The Third Time Now

posted Thursday, 22 January 2009

They say the third times a charm. We’ll see.

You would think I have been hibernating these past weeks. Like I had just buried myself under the covers and ignored all my blogfriends, (false). Perhaps I was enjoying the holidays with my family (true, and you all know how I dislike the holidays). Maybe I was working making someone’s house pretty (well, one day of wallpaper out of what now, a month?). Could be I just started coasting after the post election euphoria and totally missed the inauguration (false, false, I can’t even believe you would think such a thing).

Well, actually, I was going to start a frenzy of blogging after the holidays but unfortunately my frenzy coincided with the annual updating of the anti-virus and spy ware programs which was immediately followed by the annual crashing of the computer. It took honey until this past Sunday to get everything back up and running.

So I figure I’ll write a post and then catch up with everyone here in Blog City. So then I write a post and hit save and lose everything. So then I write a post and hit save and lose everything. So then I figure I’ll start catching up THEN write the post. I’m not trying to annoy you by repeating myself. I’m already annoyed by having repeated my post a couple of times and by not being able to share the joy of having a new president with everyone.

How did I not explode without a computer and then a computer with a mind of its own? I filled my idle hands with closet and cupboard reorganizing and came up with a nice little pile of Good Will donations. The box seems to be half filled with the last four years of smelly shower jell gifts that I had good intentions of using. Well, even poor people like to be clean and smell nice. I even did the spring cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, and washing everything. So three days down.

I ended up dipping into the Christmas gifts and going on a reading binge. Then I used those bookstore gift cards to fill in any gaps of time I had left over in between creating tasty vegetable and fish dishes. Thanks to the enjoyment of the holidays this past year, Honey and I are on the Eat More Vegetables Diet. I even tried to talk Honey into getting a treadmill and putting it in the living room so I could walk and read at the same time but he’s not going for it. He’s grown attached to the lawn chair that took the place of the ugly recliner that now lives with "the Man" at college. But, back to the books. Here is a list of the books I’ve read in the past few months:

  • The Terror by Dan Simmons-This is an entertaining and memorable story.  I highly recommend this book.  (There I fixed my boo boo)

Lisey’s Story by Stephen King

  • Duma Key by Stephen King-Ok, I admit it.  This book was purchased for my son's Christmas care package while he is out to sea, but I'm such a fan of SK I had to read it first.  I did finish it and packed it with all these books (except the last four)and homemade cookies for his Birthday care package.

The Devil’s Teardrop by Jeffery Deaver

The 6th Target by James Patterson

  • Beware by Richard Laymon--For once in my life I found and read a book that I DID NOT LIKE, I might even say I hated this book.  I sent it to my son with post it notes on ever other page pointing out every irritation.  Nasty.

T is for Trespass by Sue Grafton

Divided in Death by JD Robb

  • A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini-I really liked this one and highly recommend it.

The Lions of Lucerne by Brad Thor

  • At some point in this list Honey invades my reading cocoon and says, "I didn't realize you were such a bookworm."  I just glance his way and say, "I didn't realize you were such a sports fanatic."  Touché or as they say here in PA-touchy.

Trace by Patricia Cornwell

Devils Knot by Mara Leveritt

Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson

Avenger by Frederick Forsyth

  • Twilight by Stephenie Meyer-I stole these next two books at the family present exchange and stealing game over Christmas/New Year.
  • New Moon by Stephenie Meyer-My niece was crushed when I stole them.  I LOVED them.
  • Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer-I loved the first two so much I scoured Johnstown to find the last two and paid the hard cover price to get them.
  • Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer-I finished these last two over the weekend then packed up the whole set and sent them to my niece.  Priority Mail.  I'm not a totally mean Aunt.

And now we save and publish and . . . . . . . YEAH, it worked this time.  Third time is a charm.

Touchy! Great blog. Tell Honey that reading is much better and much much cheaper than shopping! Happy January (so glad it's almost over--can almost smell a hint of spring)!

Congrats on finally being able to save (and to write, for that matter!). I'm sure we've all lost blog posts, so we can all feel your frustration. It sure would be nice if Blog-City had some sort of auto-save-draft function like just about every e-mail program from Outlook to various webmails have.

You really were busy with the reading there! I've been avoiding the Stephanie Meyer stuff, but I've been eyeing up that Dan Simmons book for a while now--how was it?

Welcome back!

There often is a let down after New Years. Most businesses have a slow down in January and February. Maybe you've tapped into the seasonal lull. Whatever, good to have you back with your perspective. This is gonna be an interesting year.

Mom-Books are also cheaper than movies (with snacks, anyways) plus you get much more detail than they can ever put into a movie. I'm not smelling the hint of spring. Once again the weather people were soooooo focused on the below zero cold that they forgot to let everyone who was short of milk, bread, and toilet paper know that we were going to get TWO snowstorms within a couple of days of each other for a total accumulation of 8" (Yes, EIGHT INCHES).

JohnSherck-Auto save would be a nice feature. I normally write (and save) over in Word or Works then copy and paste but still after copying and pasting several parts then losing them several times was frustrating. You would like the Dan Simmons book. Good historical fiction with a bit of suspense and a touch of romance thrown in. It didn't end the way I was expecting, it was actually better than where my thoughts were headed. It was a mistake on my part for not pointing that book was also a standout in this list. All the other books on the list were entertaining stories while I was reading them (except the Richard Laymon) but there were only six that were unique enough to be memorable in my opinion. The Stephenie Meyers books are probably geared more toward a female audience with the romance aspect. It was the twist of vampires and werewolves that made them unique and interesting.

Capt.-Truer words were never spoken. Post holiday letdown affects humans and businesses alike.

THANKS you guys. It's good to be back. I missed you all too.

I was getting a bit worried. Glad it was just your computer. WOW you sure did read a lot. Out of all the books you powered through, the only book I read was a Thousand Splendid Suns. I loved this book so much. It stuck with me for so long. So beautiful. If you like this, I suggest Snowflower and the Secret Fan. It's my favorite book I've read in a long, long time. I just started The Pillars of the Earth and am loving it.

Good to have you back in action Catty.

JWL-Thanks. Some days I couldn't get through e-mails. Some days I could get through e-mail and a blog or two. Some days nothing.

Nutsy-It only sounds like a lot. These are probably the last 4 or 5 months worth. Plus I'm semi unemployed, don't have kids, and it only takes me 2 hours to clean the whole house. I ought to join a gym and spend less time cooking. Wow, thanks to all the sharing of everyones recent titles, I have a nice list going here.
